Acarbose, een complex oligosaccharide geïsoleerd uit Actinoplanes, is naar verluidt nuttig als adjuvante therapie bij diabetes.Door alfa-glucosidase te remmen, vertraagt acarbose het koolhydraatmetabolisme in het maagdarmkanaal en moduleert het veranderingen in door voedsel veroorzaakte bloedsuikerspiegels.
Acarbose is pseudo-oligosaccharide met een terminale C7-cyclitol, gepatenteerd in 1975 door Bayer.Acarbose is een component van het amylostatinecomplex geproduceerd door soorten Actinoplanes en Streptomyces.Acarbose werkt als een krachtige remmer van α-glucosidasen en saccharasen.Sinds 1990 wordt acarbose therapeutisch gebruikt voor de behandeling van diabetes type 2.
